Reduce the risk of infection
Following the good advice below, in and out of school, is even more important during the current influenza (flu) scare:
- wash your hands after using the lavatory, eating or any other activity likely to bring you into contact with germs;
- have a pack of tissues with you so that you can ‘catch’ any coughs and sneezes and throw the used tissues into a bin;
- if you do develop an infection, wash your hands even more frequently.
To their credit, most children are not absent for long and come back to school after a cough or cold relatively quickly so that their education is not damaged. During the current ‘flu scare, however, when the early symptoms may be unclear, the medical advice suggests that sufferers should stay at home in order to reduce the risk of spreading infection.
